Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman launched his campaign for New York governor on Tuesday December 9, entering a Republican primary that already features Rep. Elise Stefanik. In an announcement video, Blakeman highlighted his tenure in Nassau and cast himself as the candidate who can “put New York first.”
Blakeman touted keeping taxes flat, expanding police ranks and cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. He also spotlighted his administration’s policies on school athletics and public safety, claiming Nassau is now “the safest county in America.”
His entry sets the stage for a high-profile GOP matchup with Stefanik, who entered the race in November with the backing of state Republican Chairman Ed Cox. Stefanik’s campaign swiftly blasted Blakeman, accusing him of undermining the party’s best chance in years to win the governor’s office. Blakeman argues his leadership of Nassau County—larger in population than several states—demonstrates he is prepared for statewide office.
Gov. Kathy Hochul dismissed the Republican field as trying to “out-MAGA each other,” while her campaign issued a blistering statement criticizing Blakeman’s record and alignment with President Donald Trump. Trump, asked about the race, praised both GOP contenders and said he would “think about” weighing in.
