On Tuesday, November 8th, the 2022 General Elections were held. Predictions of a “Red Wave,” proved false, as Democrats around the country managed to prevent Republicans from gaining significant majorities in the House of Representatives and United States Senate. Also, several Democrats running for Governorships managed to defeat challenges from Republicans, including Governor Kathy Hochul. In what was certainly a closer-than-expected race, Governor Hochul made history by becoming the first woman elected Governor of New York State. Governor Hochul was declared the projected winner on election night, and as of this writing, with 94% of the vote counted, she has 3,011,837 votes (52.8%). Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin conceded yesterday, and currently has 2,689,837 votes (47.2%). “The glass ceiling like the one that’s above us here today has finally been shattered in the state of New York, and you made it happen,” the Governor told her supporters after she was declared the projected winner.
New Yorkers also decisively re-elected New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who defeated Republican Michael Henry 54% to 46%, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who bested Republican Paul Rodriguez 57% to 43%, and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who beat Joe Pinion 56% to 43%. In the New York State Legislature, the Democrats managed to hold on to control of both the Senate and Assembly. As of this writing, Democrats have won 39 seats in the Senate and 99 seats in the Assembly. Republicans have won 21 seats in the Senate and 46 in the Assembly. Incumbents of both parties in both Houses of the State Legislature who have won re-election include:
