Primary Election Results

On Tuesday, congressional, statewide, and some local primaries were held across New York. Although several incumbent Assemblymembers faced primary challenges from their left, all but one managed to defeat their challengers. The results for the most notable primaries are:

Congress

  • In the Democratic Primary for the NY-1, former CNN host John Avlon defeated Nancy Goroff in a competitive primary. Avlon will face incumbent Rep. Nick LaLota in November in an attempt to flip the district Democratic.
  • NY-10 Incumbent Democratic Rep. Daniel Goldman decisively defeated his two primary challengers, winning with 66% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez easily defeated Marty Dolan in the NY-14 Democratic Primary.
  • In what was the most competitive and heated primary of the night, Westchester County Executive George Latimer defeated incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic Primary for NY-16 with 59% of the vote.
  • State Senator John Mannion defeated Sarah Klee Hood to gain the Democratic nomination for NY-22. Mannion will now face incumbent Rep. Brandon Williams in November for one of the state’s biggest toss-up seats.
  • Incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney fended off a challenge from Mario Fratto in the NY-24 Republican Primary.

State Senate

  • Nassau County Legislator Siela Bynoe won the Democratic Primary to succeed outgoing State Senator Kevin Thomas in SD 6. She defeated Assemblymember Taylor Darling, who was endorsed by Senator Thomas, with 54% of the vote.
  • Kim Keiserman easily defeated Brad Schwartz in the Democratic Primary for SD 7, winning with 76% of the vote. Keiserman will challenge incumbent Republican Senator Jack Martins in the general election in an attempt to flip the seat back to blue. In 2022, Senator Martins, who previously served in the Senate from 2011 through 2016, flipped the seat back to red when he defeated two-term Democratic Senator Anna Kaplan.
  • In the Republican Primary for SD 48 in Central New York, Caleb Slater defeated Fanny Villarreal with 56% of the vote. Slater will challenge incumbent Democratic Senator Rachel May in November.
  • Working Families-backed candidate Chris Ryan defeated Tom Drumm in the Democratic Primary to succeed Senator John Mannion in SD 50. Ryan will face Republican Nick Paro in what will possibly be the toughest and closest election in November. In 2022, Senator Mannion won re-election, defeating his opponent by just 10 votes.
  • In the Democratic Primary for SD 59, DSA-endorsed incumbent Senator Kristen Gonzalez defeated a challenge from Gus Lambropoulos with 85% of the vote.

State Assembly

  • Rebecca Kassay defeated Working Families-backed candidate Skyler Johnson in the Democratic Primary for AD 4. In the General Election, Kassay will attempt to flip the district blue when she faces off against incumbent Republican Assemblymember Ed Flood.
  • In the Democratic Primary for AD 18, the Working Families party emerged victorious when their endorsed candidate, Noah Burroughs, defeated Lisa Ortiz. Burroughs is running to succeed Assemblymember Taylor Darling, who ran for State Senate.
  • Former Assemblymember Judy Griffin defeated Patricia Maher in the Democratic Primary for AD 21. Griffin will face incumbent Republican Assemblymember Brian Curran in a second rematch between the two. In 2018, Assemblymember Curran was defeated by Griffin after four terms in the Assembly. However, after serving two terms, Griffin was then defeated in 2022 by Curran.
  • Kenneth Paek defeated Kenneth Chiu in the Republican Primary for AD 25. Paek is attempting to unseat longtime Democratic incumbent Assemblymember Nily Rozic and flip the Democratic stronghold red.
  • Incumbent and formerly DSA-backed Assemblymember Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas fended off a challenge from Ricardo Pacheco in the Democratic Primary for AD 34.
  • In the Democratic Primary for AD 35, Larinda Hooks defeated former State Senator Hiram Monserrate in his latest comeback attempt. Hooks is running to succeed longtime incumbent Assemblymember Jeff Aubry. Assemblymember Aubry announced his retirement and support of Hooks earlier this year.
  • DSA-backed candidate Claire Valdez came out on top of the Democratic Primary for AD 37, defeating both Johanna Carmona and incumbent Assemblymember Juan Ardila with 59% of the vote. Incumbent Assemblymember Ardila, who is the only incumbent who lost their primary, faced multiple allegations of sexual assault earlier in the year. Ardila came in last place with just 9% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Ron Kim managed to fend off two challenges from Yi Chen and Dao Yin in the Democratic Primary for AD 40.
  • When Assemblymember Helene Weinstein announced she would be retiring from the Assembly after 44 years, she also announced her endorsement of New York City Councilmember Kalman Yeger in the AD 41 Democratic Primary. With Assemblymember Weinstein’s support, Yeger easily defeated Adam Dweck with 71% of the vote.
  • In the Democratic Primary for AD 50, DSA-backed incumbent Assemblymember Emily Gallagher defeated challenges from Andrew Bodiford and Anathea Simpkins, winning with 76% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon defeated Scott Budow with 80% of the vote in the Democratic Primary for AD 52.
  • In what was one of the most competitive Assembly primaries of the night, incumbent Assemblymember Stefani Zinerman emerged victorious against DSA-backed candidate Eon Tyrell Huntley in the AD 56 Democratic Primary.
  • In the Democratic Primary for AD 68, incumbent Assemblymember Eddie Gibbs defeated Tamika Mapp, Xavier Santiago, and William Smith, winning with 43% of the vote.
  • The Democratic Primary for AD 69, which is being vacated by retiring Assemblymember Danny O’Donnell, was another competitive primary. Micah Lasher, former policy advisor for Governor Kathy Hochul, came out on top with 53% of the vote, defeating Carmen Quinones, Melissa Rosenberg, and the Assemblymember O’Donnell-endorsed Eli Northrup.
  • In the AD 70 Democratic Primary, Jordan Wright defeated Shana Harmongoff, Maria Ordonez, and Craig Schley. Wright is running to succeed Assemblymember Inez Dickens, who is retiring.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Al Taylor defeated Julien Segura in the Democratic Primary for AD 71.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Manny De Los Santos held off a challenge from Francesca Castellanos in the AD 72 Democratic Primary.
  • In AD 77, incumbent Assemblymember Landon Dais, who was elected in a Special Election earlier this year after Assemblymember Latoya Joyner stepped down, won the Democratic Primary against challenger Leonard Coello.
  • Longtime incumbent Assemblymember Michael Benedetto decisively won the AD 82 Democratic Primary, defeating DSA-backed candidate Jonathan Soto.
  • The Democratic Primary in AD 84 was won by incumbent Assemblymember Amanda Septimo, who defeated Hector Feliciano with 73% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Maryjane Shimsky faced a rematch against former Assemblymember Thomas Abinanti in the AD 92 Democratic Primary. Shimsky, who defeated Abinanti in the 2022 Democratic Primary, again emerged victorious, winning with 60% of the vote.
  • Candidate Aron Wieder defeated Eudson Francois in the Democratic Primary for AD 97. Wieder will challenge incumbent Republican Assemblymember John McGowan in November.
  • In the AD 100 Republican Primary, Louis Ingrassia Jr. secured the Republican nomination, beating out Camille O’Brien. Ingrassia will face off against Democrat Paula Key to succeed Democratic Assemblymember Aileen Gunther, who is retiring.
  • Janet Tweed defeated Working Families-backed candidate Mary Finneran in the Democratic Primary for AD 102. Tweed will attempt to flip the district blue when she faces incumbent Republican Assemblymember Chris Tague in the General Election.
  • DSA-backed incumbent Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha managed to hold off a challenge from Gabi Madden in AD 103, winning with 66% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Assemblymember Didi Barrett defeated Working Families-backed challenger Claire Cousin in the Democratic Primary for AD 106.
  • Progressive candidate Chloe Pierce, who is endorsed by the Working Families Party, defeated Kent Sopris in the AD 107 Democratic Primary. Pierce will be challenging incumbent Republican Assemblyman Scott Bendett in November.
  • In what was the most crowded primary of the night, Working Families-backed Gabriella Romero secured the Democratic nomination to succeed Assemblywoman Pat Fahy in AD 109. Assemblywoman Fahy is running for the State Senate to succeed longtime Senator Neil Breslin, who is retiring.
  • In the Democratic Primary for AD 137, incumbent Assemblymember Demond Meeks defeated challenger Willie Lighfoot.
  • Lastly, incumbent Assemblymember David DiPietro defeated Mitch Martin in the AD 147 Republican Primary.
